If there’s one thing we like writing about, it’s Magic: the Gathering. However, sometimes it’s nice to stray away from the technical details and discuss something a little more fun.
That’s why today, rather than gauging the playability or power level of particular cards like we did in our guide to the best commanders for horror-themed EDH decks, we’re going to talk about fangirl or fanboy-worthy planeswalkers.
That’s right. In today’s post, we’ll be going over some of what we feel are the hottest planeswalkers in MTG. Scroll down to see who we thought could be MTG’s next top model.
A Quick Disclaimer…
Before we launch into our list, we’d like to start by making a few disclaimers. We’d also like to set the criteria by which we selected contenders.
First, we chose only playable planeswalkers for this list. That just means that each of the planeswalkers we chose have cards you can use in decks. This is precisely why we chose them; if you’re particularly interested in them, you can put them in a deck to look at their lovely faces more often.
Second, this list includes both men and women. If they have a pretty face, they likely made it on this list.
It should also go without saying that this post is purely opinion. We’re obviously not the final judges on any of these planeswalkers.
Finally, the way a planeswalker looks has nothing to do with his or her power level in game. Some of these planewalkers are available in extraordinarily powerful cards, like Jace. Others do not have as many powerful cards to choose from. That’s not the focus of this article, however.
Anyway, without further ado…
Hottest Planeswalkers in MTG
1. Oko
In our article about why Oko is good, we mentioned that he has a decidedly unique look that would appeal to many people. This is why he made an appearance on our site a second time in our list of MTG cards with handsome men on them.
Now, we’re featuring him a third time. In other words, he kind of gets around. We can’t say we mind.
2. Liliana
Liliana was a shoo-in for this list. As cliché as it might be to pick her, just look at her. That’s actual and official card art for her, too.
She may waver back and forth between good and evil, but we’d be willing to bet most people would forgive her for it.
3. Sorin
If you’re into the sexy vampire thing, Sorin’s your guy. We know the picture we included above probably isn’t the most flattering, but trust us when we say he’s perfect for any daring soul.
Want to take a little stroll on the dark side? Sorin lives there and would make an excellent guide.
4. Chandra
So we’re being a bit punny by including Chandra Nalaar on our list. As a pyromancer with control over fire, she is, quite literally, hot.
Not to mention artwork of her like that pictured above. Despite how she looks, though, you might not want to get too close unless you’re willing to be baked alive.
5. Gideon
Are heroic, self-sacrificing guys your type? Then Gideon Jura is your man. Seriously, he sacrificed himself to protect Liliana – even when everyone else was against her.
He was the stuff of legends, and we’d say he was pretty swoon-worthy.
6. Nissa
If you love all things nature, then Nissa Revane is the perfect companion for you. She was originally introduced to the universe as a nature mage who adored flowers.
Don’t think this means she doesn’t have some bite, though. Nissa is perfectly capable of kicking butt when she needs to. Plus, it’s hard not to be jealous of her luxurious hair.
7. Jace
Jace is the quintessential planeswalker. His infamous card, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, broke formats when it was released. If you play it in Commander, where it is currently legal, people will still target you.
Oh, and let’s not forget he’s pretty easy on the eyes, too. Unfortunately, given his propensity for deleting his own memories, he might not be the long-term relationship sort of guy.
8. Rowan
Rowan Kenrith was the featured art for the whole Throne of Eldraine set, which you can see above. We can see why, too.
Interestingly, she has a twin brother named Will. We ended up not choosing him for this list, though, because we thought he looked kind of plain.
9. Teferi
Teferi was another one who made it on our list of MTG cards with handsome men on them. We couldn’t help but including him here, as well.
Not only does he have a handsome stern look, but he’s capable of controlling time. If you can’t think of some excellent uses for that ability, you just need to think a little harder.
10. Kiora
In many of the cards she’s on, Kiora is portrayed in this elegant super model-esque manner. She looks like the alluring siren of many a sailor’s dream.
She is, in all actuality, a merfolk. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that you can find her posing seductively in the ocean on the majority of her cards.
11. Ral
As the Izzet Guildmaster, you can trust Ral Zarek’s got a decent amount of influence. Plus, he’s got that strangely appealing touch of silver thing going on his hair that gives him a look of dignity.
12. Kaya
Kaya’s another Guildmaster, which means you can rest assured she’s powerful. We should also probably mention that she’s an assassin, so if you’re looking for someone bad ass and wholly independent, she’s a solid choice.
Funnily enough, she made it on our list of creepiest planeswalkers in MTG, thanks to her ability to kill ghosts. Can you imagine being killed by Kaya twice – once as a person and another time as a ghost?
What can we say, though – we like a little danger.
Wrap Up
The Multiverse isn’t just a place filled with darkness – it’s speckled with bright points, too…if by bright points, you mean people who are alluring in just about every way.
It’s sometimes necessary to set aside the competitive nature of the game and have some fun. Our hope is that this post did just that for you, at least temporarily.
Who is your favorite planeswalker? Do you think there’s an attractive character we missed? If so, drop a comment below and maybe we can do a second part further down the road.
